Rorate Mass is a Beautiful Ancient Advent Custom

Rorate Mass
Missa Cantata

A Rorate Mass is a beautiful ancient Advent custom where by mass is celebrated Illuminated only by candlelight, usually before dawn. The bass is a Votive Mass of the Blessed Virgin, And so it is celebrated in white, rather than Advent purple. “Rorate” is the first word of the Introit chant for a Votive Mass of the Blessed Virgin in Advent. There is also a beautiful Advent Geregorian chant hymn that uses this text, which comes from Isaiah 14.

In a time before electricity, a pre-dawn Mass was celebrated entirely by candlelight.

I attended my first Rorate mass yesterday December 16, 2017. What a beautiful and wonderful way to grow closer to our Lord.
